Isn't moral anarchy kind of the point?

Batgirl

I realised I hadn't actually done a post talking about how much this comic makes me happy. It's adorable, and I actually teared up at this scene from issue #4. STEPH. Little girls love her and look up to her! IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY.

If you don't know the tangled and intense history which makes me feel so incredibly deeply about the fact that Stephanie Brown is the lead character in the new Batgirl series... well, actually, that doesn't matter at all! Because this book is PERFECT for jumping into if you only know the barest, barest amount about Batman. IT IS DESIGNED FOR NEWBIES, and I fucking ADORE that. It WANTS you to jump in without knowing the characters and continuity and canon!

IT JUST WANTS TO TELL AWESOME STORIES ABOUT A GIRL IN A BAT COSTUME WHO FIGHTS CRIME.

Seriously, check this book out if you want a little bit more joy in your life. It's only five or six issues in, so you can probably find the entire series at your local comics store, or pick it up from whatever issue you can find because seriously, it's so new-reader friendly that it's kind of astonishing -- comics are SO not usually readily accessible to non-cultists, trust me on this. I've been a DC mouthbreather for about six years now and even I find it hard to crack into new parts of the universe, but this book is like HIIII COME IN AND ENJOY HOW AMAZING THESE STORIES ABOUT CAPES AND SUPERVILLAINS ARE OMG.

Stephanie's sassy and funny and if you ever loved early Buffy, you'll LOVE this, as it's clearly going for the same sort of vibe as Buffy's early seasons would have had if they'd been about Gotham City instead of Sunnydale.

In short: GO CHECK OUT BATGIRL, IT IS THE MOTHERFUCKING BOMB, SERIOUSLY.

STEPH!

This is such a fun series. Even if everyone has managed to forget Cass exists for several months running. (Also, Babs grumping at Steph through the Cave computer has eerily Bruce-and-Terry vibes, but I think that's kind of a plus.)

I liked the bit recently where Steph was making up what Batman was saying while he met with someone (Gordon? I honestly already forget.) and was all "Me too, chum!" Also, Damian being a creepster: shockingly hilarious.

Plus Steeeeeph. Comics are absolutely trying to be fun again sometimes now. I AM NOT SURE I TRUST IT.

I'll have to check it out.

Meanwhile, what about Batwoman? Have you been reading it? I have, and it's excellent.

I don't even really understand what's going on over at DC. Bruce goes away and suddenly there is Batgirl -- which is almost Batgirls with how much we get to say of Oracle, yays, maybe Cass will make some appearances too -- and then Batwoman takes over Detective itself being awesome and super gay and the book doesn't even flinch from it, not ever.

Seriously, WHAT HAPPENED to them? Not a complaint, but it's so baffling!
