Isn't moral anarchy kind of the point?
Wed, Feb. 17th, 2010 01:29 pm
And fuck you too.

Anybody want a ticket to Amanda Palmer in Melbourne? She just tweeted setting aside 846 emails and removing the disabled feminists from her mental periphery, @amandapalmer sat down to plan her next record. and you know what, as a disabled feminist who was really offended by EvelynEvelyn as a concept, and tweeted repeatedly to tell her so, I'm just fucking done. There's enough good music in the world that I don't have to stay a fan of people who outright disrespect me and my feelings like that.

Between this and Tony Abbott being a perpetual dickbag about every single thing on earth, I am pretty much fucking DONE with today, Christ.

Edit: Hey there, those coming from FWD/Forward. I'm honored to be linked from there. Amanda Palmer has blocked me on twitter. Classy.

...

thank god I hadn't bought tickets. That's saved me $100 for myself and Clare.

Dammit, she was doing so WELL. Then this. There are whole skeevy assumption issues about co-opting people's voices being a form of silencing and then to just... DISMISS people's legitimate complaints. Erk.

Don't bite my head off, but I'm interested in why you find EvelynEvelyn so offensive? I've read people's blogs and comments about this, and I'm troubled by the number of people who find it offensive, and why I as a disabled person don't.

I wouldn't bite your head off. :) kylieq articulated a lot of it really well downthread, but my basic hatred of the idea is that she's making being disabled, being sexually exploited, being child trafficked into a fairly pathetic art project about how the brave sane Abled People saved the weird little cripples and brought their music to the world.

To be honest, although I am not disabled, the thing I find the most offensive is her attitude about/towards the criticism.

Obviously, I find the conceit of Evelyn Evelyn and their backstory extremely offensive. But people fuck up, they do fucked up things - especially in the name of "art" and "entertainment."

But responsible people who are committed to respecting other people do not fucking sweep aside a huge number of complaints. I feel that as an artist she has a responsibility to be accountable for her art and any hurt it may cause. And not only is she not doing that, she's not doing it in an incredibly hurtful way.

I'm fucking pissed. It reminds me of how much my heart was broken by Kathleen Hanna and The Butchies during the whole Michigan Womyn's Music Festival transphobia bullshit back in the day. I hate this feeling.

May I write something for PGFAG about how I feel? Would you be interested in writing part of such an article too, since what you just said articulated my general feelings so well?

Hey, thanks for posting about this. I don't have her twitter friended so I woulda missed it otherwise.

Do you know if anyone's tried tweeting any of the other people involved in the project? I know Neil Gaiman mentioned the criticism in a blog post and seemed a little bit more moderated in his response...

As I said to stele3, people get things wrong - I can see how this idea could come from her general fascination with circus culture. But then she's not only refused to engage with criticism, but actively dismissed it. That's fucking rude and fucking entitled.

The post on FWD is good, but don't read the comments!

as a disabled feminist who was really offended by EvelynEvelyn as a concept
While I understand -- at least here, in this instance -- that you're speaking for yourself: In a broader sense, when do we decide that something has gone "too far"? Do you know how much music (or art in general) any of us would have access to if everything that could potentially offend someone didn't exist?

and tweeted repeatedly to tell her so, I'm just fucking done.
But really, what it all comes down to is that...those two words, actually: tweeted repeatedly
Whether Amanda has 400,000 followers, or 4, that's not only poor net etiquette, it's just fucking ignorant. It's called "spam"...I'd have blocked you, too. If I sat here on your LiveJournal saying the same thing over and over waiting for you to acknowledge me, are you truly telling me you'd just let it continue, filling up your page with bullshit, detracting from the legitimate conversations you're trying to have? It's not just that you or your tweets were contrary to "I LOVE YOU AMANDA", it's that talking louder trying to be heard over the crowd/repeating yourself, isn't the way to make a point* (as someone who reads her @ replies, I know there are PLENTY of people saying nasty shit to her she isn't blocking)...

* This could be/is relative to anything, not just things with which we find offensive in life. An item that arrived broken from Amazon, a piece of work from a coworker that's needed to complete a project, wanting some skim milk for your coffee, asking your friend to a movie, etc........how effectually could any of those things happen if everyone at once -- or in the case of Amanda's Twitter, 400k people -- decided to repeat their particular prerogative, over and over?

I wasn't just tweeting the same thing over and over, dude. It took multiple tweets for me to explain my problem -- that's what I meant. And I know you're Amanda's friend and feel passionately about that, but I'm disheartened how quickly you made this a personal attack at me rather than listening to what I'm saying.

It's not about not creating art that offends people, it's about not listening to the groups you're mocking when they're upset by you.

For fucks sake...

You are actually the biggest douchebag in the world... Disabled Feminist? What the fuck, how self centered can you be? To honestly think that while writing a new album with a FICTIONAL storyline Amanda would stop and think "shit, I might offend some disabled feminists here..." It's a concept? Just because it's ABOUT conjoined twins doesn't mean it's insulting them...You may as well be offended by...any movie that involves a minority. She apologized. Grow the fuck up.
