Have you heard the Rumor?

This is going to shock exactly nobody, but I have a deep fondness for Allison Hargreeves, aka the Rumor, aka 00.03, from The Umbrella Academy (I mean, I did dye my hair that one time). Gerard claims that she, of all the characters, talks most like him, but I'm yet to see her say anything is a metaphor for gunfights or vampires or cancer or whatever, so I'm not sure what he's getting at with that.

Loving snark aside, I'm fascinated by the fact that the Rumor -- like all the UA kids -- can be read as an exploration of what an emotionally neglected childhood can do to a person's adulthood. In Allison's case this manifests as a need to be paid attention to, and being dishonest (as displayed through her superpower of changing the truth by telling lies... ohmygosh, it's almost like a metaphor! ♥), and being beautiful/charming for those around her. All of which are among the ways in which damaged kids learn to manipulate their surroundings to their best advantage.

Anyway! Enough ten-cent-meta from me for now. What I'm here to do today is show off some of the pretty arts around featuring Ms #3.

Ross Campbell, who not only numbers among the artists from Hopeless Savages (my favourite comic of all time which doesn't include domino masks anywhere) but who also donated a lot of incredibly amazing things to the Girl-Wonder.org auction, has done this gorgeous drawing of the Rumor. (His site is here.)

Another lush Rumor is this one by Weshoyot Alvitre. (Also check out Vanya looking fantastic.)

Browsing devart, I dig this Rumor by shinigamiKLOU, and staying in the more svelte side of things, DragonLady4 gives us this Rumor.

I remember seeing this really excellent, powerful-looking Rumor on a comic artist's sketch blog not that long ago -- one artist did the line art, and then someone else had done a color version as well. But I've been hunting through my history folder and trying to google-fu it for about half an hour now with no luck... can anyone help me unfail at this? I am all a-woe and tooth gnashy at my inability to correctly work my internetting machine.

Edit: I had the lineart image saved on my hard drive, but I still don't know artist info -- please, please, please let me know if you know who drew this Rumor, so I can have their shiny shiny babies.

!!! I love all the Rumors. I still have not read the Umbrella Academy, because in Roanoke I...honestly cannot find a comic book store. At least not one I can get to with no car. But [info]evil_authoress is mailing me #2. Which means I must get #1 somehow. Maybe at the Zone over break (while I'm home for Xmas I have comics THANK GOD.)

Also, Ross Campbell = lovelovelove. I was so pleased when his version of the Rumor showed up on my devwatch.

Aw! There are torrents for comics online, usually. Not that I advocate stealing! But if you can't get to a shop, it's a little different.

some of those are so gorgeous.

i'm really into Diego, like, I think he is so fucking.. gah. And Ben, I want to know what he did, or what he was like and what happened to him. Every drawing of him seems to have him with a sad or nervous facial expression.. like he doesnt like himself much. That reminds me of Remus Lupin (dunno if you're a big HP person)

I find all the characters really interesting.. like Gerard says stuff about the Rumor is like him... but I see Spaceboy as like, who he really wishes he could be.. Diego is, I am sorry, so much like Bert. That confrontation between Space and the Kraken? it's just so Bert. and Klaus reminds me of Mikey. Like, I know they're characters, but I think each of his characters he's drawing on someone in his life, maybe?

/ramble.

I love Diego as well. My favourite comic book character, DC Comics' Jason Todd, is a LOT like him -- to the point where a lot of people have joked in this journal that Diego IS him, heh. And I'm exactly the same as you about Ben (and YES, I'm a huge HP person, Remus owns a piece of my heart forever), that's why I wrote him as I did in the snippetyfic I did recently. I think he's a little sweetheart, and the images of Seance sitting on his memorial make my heart go squish.

Klaus reminds me of Mikey to look at, but in personality he kind of reminds me of Rockstar!Gerard. The queeny, crazy one onstage, you know? And Space is kind of like the kid who wanted to be a bigshot comics dude and then kind of ended up having that dream crushed. Vanya's got some of addict-Gerard in her; that one at least I know for certain.

Has she, perhaps, mentioned anything about sucking someone off for cocaine?

I would hasten to clarify that that is not my vision of the Rumor as a growed-up girl.

Do you know, btw, if #4 of the UA is out or on its way? I keep seeing refs to #5 due in January, but did I miss an issue somewhere?

I believe it comes out this week.

AHAHAHA NOW I WANT A STRICTLY BALLROOM AU. Gerard would, obviously, be Fran.

OHHHH WOW. All I can see is Spencer Smith as that little red-haired girl who watches the rubbish auditionees early on, and says, "a little musicality, please."

By far the best part in that movie is the Dad though. The shaky hand clapping! Break my heart!

Ha, you should love me more. My first thought for the dad was to make him Ray, and then I honestly thought, no, claireweasley would be mad at Ray not being a sexy character. Heh. But, I mean, he sortof gets his own love interest, right? And we could have the mom-figure be someone really hot! AHAHAHAH RYAN ROSS. Giving Gerard "island sunrise" makeovers! "I'VE GOT MY HAPPY FACE ON TODAY, RAY!"

OMG YES. Ahaha, let's face it. Ray being Dad totally fits my Protectoro fetish anyway! And now I'm getting these wonderful images of Ray dancing by himself and everyone being like OMG KNOCK IT OFF.

It also kind of makes me want Bob Bryar to be Scott so that he can deliver the delightful line: "I want to dance. Your Way. At the Pan Pacifics." with absolutely no emotion. Just like Paul Mecurio did! (Also he'd have to help Pete Wentz with his Bogo pogo.)

And Dad!Ray has a bit of a belly! And wears those shiny polyester shirts! LOVE IT.

I'm having a problem with the Scott thing, I have to say. Because Scott is meant to be, like, at least on the outside, somewhat cool. And... MCR just aren't. It's in the manifesto, like. The closest they have is Mikey with his potentially scene-queeny roots but a sibling romance just won't do it for me, I have to say. Call me old-fashioned! WAIT WAIT - BRIAN!!! Brian is cool, RIGHT? I mean, a BIT? And sort of jaded and eye-rolly! He could totally do it.

Also have decided that the mom would be better played by Brendon, who is much more naturally hysterical. He can give haircuts instead of makeup tips. How do I know so much fanon about Panic?

AHAH. Um, I think we're at a crossroads with Scott, because (to me, at least) Scott is firmly ingrained with Paul Mecurio (Now a judge on the Australian version of Dancing With The Stars) and so I tried to say "Come on, Paul Mecurio was cool as Scott" outloud right now and laughed so loudly it scared my kitty.

I agree with you about Brendon. Very hysterical. But what about the equally hysterical and very angry Liz? Who would play her? Bill Beckett? What about the drunk Ken guy? Gabe or Travis?

This is becoming unreasonably difficult.

Well, OKAY. See, it gets hard, I've decided, when you think in terms of who is going to be a villain and such - because no band boys should be villains! Not even Bert! OMG WHO WILL BERT BE, I LOVE THIS. Anyway, I think it's impt to think about the character's KEY TRAITS and go from there. Like, that Ken guy? He has awesome floofy hair and likes drinking and lazing around in hot tubs. ERGO: Travis! Easy peasy.

Tina Sparkle though... is Mikey really stroppy enough? OMG Maybe MIKEY SHOULD BE THE DAD! FUCK. YOU'RE RIGHT THIS IS IMMENSELY HARD WORK.
