I am absolutely certain that T'pring thinks this shirt is tacky.I watched a couple more TOS episodes last night, between bouts of fitful and nightmare-rich napping, eck. I think 'The Enemy Within' may be up there with tribbles and pon farr as a piece of absolute perfection. The episode is a neverending font of fabulousness and glorious acting, with Shatner giving his all twice over.
One thing I found interesting about it was that I've long known that
Firefly is, among other things, meant to be a direct riff/critique on Star Trek and its version of frontier/federation concepts in space. And the central plot of
Serenity, the Firefly movie, deals ver much with the same ground covered in 'The Enemy Within': that the loss of our baser and more negative traits also removes our ability to be dynamic, creative, and alive. And Joss, I love you, dude, but you ain't no Richard Matheson, who was redefining 'vampire slayer' before you were born. I was delighted to see Matheson's name come up in the credits for this episode, because the writer of something this good deserves to be a well-known genre name.
'The Enemy Within' is also, as usual, a story about how Spock is massively in love with Jim, seriously guys just get a room already. It ends on the extremely random note of Spock remarking wryly to Janice, essentially, that it's a shame non-base-instincts Jim isn't more prone to pinning people down on the floor of their rooms and ravishing them.
And then I watched 'Mudd's Women', whose A-plot seems to carry the lesson that real love is defined by how well you and your intended can engage in bitchy banter, and whose B-plot is about how Spock and Bones remain the absolute masters of bitchy banter. (My favourite exchange between the pair remains the one from 'Tribbles' that's
my user info.)
In conclusion: this show is the most fun ever.
Now I'm off into the city to meet Audz and Relle for lunch, and then in the evening I'm going to the
ontd_startrek meet-up screening of the ST movie, which should be good times: it's at Crown at 7pm and we're all meeting at 6:30, so if you're in Melbourne and you wish for geeker fun, COME ALONG.
